Beethoven, Herder y Goethe: la humanidad divina como Prometeo

Abstract

lniciado como un movimiento crítico de la modernidad, el Sturm und Drang alemán propuso una concepción distinta del humano, que exigía una renovación de la razón en armonía con la totalidad de las facultades humanas en favor del desarrollo de la individualidad. De esta manera se centralizaba la cualidad creadora del ser humano, sin subordinar el desarrollo de las demás facultades humanas. En este trabajo se analiza la reinterpretación del mito de Prometeo en el trabajo de tres personalidades: el filósofo Johann G. Herder, el literato Johann W. von Goethe y el compositor Ludwig van Beethoven. Del primero, se examina su teoría del genio, explicada por medio de la figura de Shakespeare; del segundo se aborda el lugar de Prometeo en la obra del poeta; mientras que del tercero se analiza su tercera sinfonía, Heroica. Al final, se concluye que, en los tres pensadores, la figura del titán Prometeo representa ese espíritu rebelde que, rechazando a los dioses, encamina todos sus actos hacia el engrandecimiento del ser humano y de la humanidad.

Initiated as a critical movement of Modernity, the German Sturm und Drang proposed a different conception of the human being, which sought a renewal of reason in harmony with the totality of human faculties in favor of the development of individuality. Thus, the creative quality of the human being was centralized, without subordinating the development of the other human faculties. This paper analyzes the reinterpretation of the Prometheus myth in the work of three personalities: the philosopher Johann G. Herder, the literary Johann W. von Goethe, and the composer Ludwig van Beethoven. Of the first, we examine his theory of genius explained through the figure of Shakespeare; of the second, the place of Prometheus within the poet’s work, while of the third, his Third Symphony, the Heroic, is analyzed. In the end, the conclusion is that in all three thinkers the figure of the titan Prometheus represents that rebellious spirit that, rejecting the Gods, directs all his actions towards the aggrandizement of the human being and of humanity.
